What this tool does

Pick one of two options in 21 dating scenes — 'say you like them, or let them notice?', 'make up tonight, or sleep on it?' — and your answers are tallied on three axes, expression, closeness and conflict, to give you one of 8 love styles. The result shows your type and description, how many times you picked each side of every axis, and your best and toughest matches, and each type has its own detailed page. Send your partner or a friend a link and they can answer the same 21 questions and see how many answers you share and where you match or differ on each axis. Not dating right now? That's fine: think of a past relationship or simply what you imagine you would do.

How it is calculated

The 21 questions are split 7 per axis, and each answer adds one point to one letter of one axis only. Expression is Direct (G: you say it out loud) vs Subtle (S: you show it through actions and timing); closeness is Together (T: lots of time and contact) vs Independent (I: your own time and space matter too); conflict is Talk now (F: sort it out on the spot) vs Cool down (C: calm down first, then talk). Each axis has an odd number of questions (7), so there are no ties: the letter you picked more often becomes your lean, and the three letters form your code. For example, Direct 5 / Subtle 2, Together 3 / Independent 4 and Talk now 6 / Cool down 1 gives GIF, the Honest Free Spirit. Matches follow this test's own rule. Your best match shares your closeness and conflict letters but has the opposite expression letter (one leads, one sets the pace, while you share the same rhythm of time together and of conflict). Your toughest match has the same expression letter but the opposite closeness and conflict letters (two friction points at once). For the GIF above, the best match is SIF and the toughest is GTC. There is no randomness: the same answers always give the same type. The comparison link (#vs=…) holds only your 21 A/B answers, never a name.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

How is my type decided?

Seven questions each add a point to expression (Direct or Subtle), closeness (Together or Independent) and conflict (Talk now or Cool down). The letter you picked more on each axis goes into a three-letter code like GTF. The result screen shows the score for every axis.

What are the matches based on?

A rule this test sets for itself. The type with the same closeness and conflict letters but the opposite expression letter is shown as your best match; the type with the same expression letter but opposite closeness and conflict letters is your toughest match. 'Toughest' doesn't mean incompatible — it means there's more worth talking through early on.

How do I compare with my partner?

Send the comparison link from your result screen. Whoever opens it answers the same 21 questions and sees, question by question, whether they chose what you chose. At the end they get the number of matching answers, the list of questions you split on, and a note for each axis depending on whether you're on the same side or different sides. The link carries only your answers, no name.

Can I take it if I'm single?

Yes. Think of a past relationship, or answer the way you imagine you'd act if you were dating. Comparing with friends is fun too — you get a peek at each other's dating style.

Is this a psychological test?

No. It's a 21-question game made by this site, not a validated psychological test or any kind of diagnosis. Please don't use it to judge a person or a relationship — enjoy it as a conversation starter.
